Another, longer pause. She bit her lip and glanced to the side, as though embarrassed by her rant.
"...If you're a test subject, what're you doing here? We're pretty far from the testing tracks, unless the facil'ty really has changed that much since I've been out."

[hasuchan]

"Eh, you can say I...took an alternate route. Met up with this one girl and followed her a while, ended up back in the tests, then back away from the tests...and here I am now."
Hazel shot a portal at a white surface, then pondered where she should shoot the next one.

"Hm." Eighty Seven eyed the portal gun for a second before shaking her head, as though dismissing an idle thought.
Rolling down her cuffs, she began cleaning the grime off some of the loose panels, in search of a portal surface.

[hasuchan]

"Nah, that one's not a portal surface. I can tell."
While Hazel's back was to Eighty Seven, she still knew exactly where she was cleaning, and she knew it was a black tin surface that usually coated the entire test center.

"...You can tell through all this grime, huh? My optics must be malfunctionin'." She managed a weak, sarcastic sort of smile cast in the other girl's general direction, before moving onto the next one.
It was black too. As was the next, and the next, and the next... Eight Seven made a frustrated clicking noise under her breath, and joined Hazel in scanning the walls.

"No, I've just been here too long. I can tell what wall's what just by tapping it." she walked up to a portal surface and tapped it. It made a sound like knocking on thick plastic. "That's a portal surface sound, even through grime." then she walked up to a black tin wall and knocked on it. It made a sound like ringing a gong, but without the echo. "That's a non-portal surface. I guess I've been in here so long I start analyzing things too much..."

"Oh." There was a short pause, while the bot took a short puff on her cigarette. She smiled. "I'll keep that in mind. Thanks.
"Well, you've got the portal gun. Shoot the thing, and we'll get out of here, neh?"

[hasuchan]

"Not quite that simple, 87. We need to get that weighted companion cube up to that button up there." She pointed to each in turn. "I think momentum has a turn in this one." she murmured, looking down a hole with portal surfaces at the bottom. "Let's see how this would work..." she then stood silently, thinking very intently.

The girl eyed the cube, then the portal surface. Her optics slowly meandered up the wall, following the zigzag of supports crossing the panels, before flickering back to the cube, following some unseen trajectory.
She nodded once, thoughtfully.
"Well, I can see why you hav'n't seen a human succeed here: the risks of the jump are too great. I'll do it. If I fall, I'll be fine." As long as nothing punctures my shell, and I don't glitch, she added to herself, keeping her face impassive as she wandered over to one of the rusted-out girders.
She pulled herself up; it held.

"Nah, I can do it. The jump isn't that far with these." She clicked her heels together, showing off supports on her boots. "Did you really think Apeture--er, Wheatley Labratories, would send some poor bloke in a test with momentum without these babies? They'd break their legs!" She walked over to the hole, shot at the portal surface, and grabbed the cube. "Let's hope I jump far enough."

"...Seriously, you don't want to do this. What happened to taking your time? I can get it in one jump, if you let me."
There was a pause. Eighty Seven grimaced, and sighed around her cigarette.
"Look, I'm programmed to put human life above all risks; mil'tary-grade medical android, all that. However, those risks'll always be calculated with me. If I thought there was more than a seventy perc'nt chance you could make the jump without climbing, I wouldn't be doin' it. No offense or anything, but the parabola's too long." She stopped crawling, rolled into a sitting position, and looked down at her new partner. "And you've only got protection on your feet. Unlike you, if I slip a little and hit my head in the landing, I'll be fine." One knuckle rapped against her temple. "Plastic's more durable than bone."
Out of sight, the other thumb traced around the panel set at the base of her spine.
"Logically, it makes the most sense for me to do the jump. I know it's a little hypocritical of me, but now is not the time to be prideful."

"Sure, yeah, I take my time. That's how I stay alive. But i also take care of myself and keep trying. If i don't try, I won't make it the next time they bring up that kind of test again in a different chamber. I get that you're concerned for me, but I've faced enough turrets already and been fine. Thanks for your caring remarks. However, if you'd like to take the cube and jump first, you can, but i'll jump down after you on my own."

Her head tipped back as she let off a sigh of frustration, bangs sweeping out of her eyes. What is it with humans and their pride?! She sat there for a long moment, optics fixed on the faint trickling in from a far-off hole in the ceiling.
The teal lights expanded ad she sighed again, looking back to Hazel.
"Fine. But at least wait to see how I land, so that you know for sure if I'm over-shooting the mark. Toss me the cube?"

"Heads up." Hazel said as she lightly tossed the cube to Eighty Seven. "I guess the way I explained it earlier was kind of selfish. What i meant to say was that taking your time also requires trial and error..."

"It's fine," she responded, grabbing the cube. "I get it. But I don't trust this place, and sometimes trial and error is too risky."
The bot stood. She eyed the portal, took two, small shuffling steps to the right, and nodded to herself. Then she jumped.
